About Gabriel

Born and raised in San Francisco, Gabriel Shepard has been a music lover all his life. When he was 8 years old he opened up a favorite cassette that had broken, and performed his first splice with scissors and masking tape. There was no turning back; he was hooked. With piles of tapes with songs recorded off the radio still sitting in his closet 15 years later, he decided to go to school to learn the art of recording. From there to historic Hyde Street Studios he assisted for the likes of Mark Needham, Tom Flye, and The Scientist. For the past 16 years he’s been engineering at some of the top studios in the Bay Area where he earned a platinum and gold record with the band Cake. Other artists include Mark Kozelek, Black Francis, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Pharoah Sanders.

I’m on a Podcast!

I can’t remember exactly when I met Matt, but it was a while ago. Probably at the studio he used to run called Broken Radio. I’ve run into him at various events over the years and am always happy to see him. We finally got a chance sit down and chat. Just so happens there were microphones there.


Been a while…

After about a year of taking a break from recording, I’m back in full swing.

Well, I didn’t take the whole year off.

I was working on new Frightwig tracks with Eric Drew Feldman. We did basics at Decibelle Recording, and are about to start mixing in the next few weeks.

And, the Cure For Gravity record is almost done. We have a couple more days at 25th Street Recording of 11th hour recording and mix touch ups.

Lastly, I’m knee deep in mixing Rob Waller’s Solo record. I’ve known Rob for at least 20 years. My very first record I made when I started at Hyde Street in the mid 90’s was with his band, The Magic Of Television. We made that record on 2″ tape and mixed on the Neve. That was a true learning experience. We spliced tape, flipped the tape upside down to make backwards reverb, triggered samples with the Eventide H3500, spent countless hours overdubbing and mixing.  One of my favorite nights was when Rob, Anthony Laques (Drums), and I were doing a midnight to 8am session. Around 1am, Shock G from Digital Underground showed up with a friend of his and asked if they could hang out and play pool. Of course, I said yes. Rob and Anthony were sort of freaking out that he was there and mustered up the courage to go talk to him. They told him they were big fans and then the two of them started reciting the lyrics to “Freaks of the Industry” in unison for him and his friend. Pretty great. We all had a good laugh, and then probably smoked some weed. (Kids: Drugs are bad!)

Recording Round up

Here’s a quick update on what I’ve been up to in the last month:

Finished mixing a 7 song EP for Andrew Bancroft, AKA, Jelly D. This is more of a singer/songwriter record with acoustic guitars, drums, and strings. One of the songs features Sean Hayes on background vocals.

Spent a day recording drums with Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters at 25th Street Recording for an upcoming vinyl release. Very excited about this. The studio is a joy to work at. Top notch gear and great staff.

Had a great day at Decibelle Recording Studio in San Francisco recording seminal 80’s female punk band Frightwig featuring Eric Drew Feldman. This studio was called Mobius from 1976 to 2002. Now its run by JJ Wiesler and features some great gear with a great console.


MacClain & Cole “New Year’s Letter” free download!

Spent time before the new year recording a song for MacClain & Cole’s new mini EP.  We recorded the song at 25th Street Recording using nothing but Mercury Recording Equipment. The song is available for a free download and there’s a great video that Amy made for the song.  Enjoy!

Polyphonic Spree “Holidaydream” Available Oct. 23rd on CD and Vinyl!

This is the Holiday record that Eric Drew Feldman and I mixed a couple of months ago.  Now it’s available on CD  and 180 gram vinyl tomorrow from Kirtland Records.  Here’s an early review of the disc from Slant Magazine.  Buy it!!

And I’m knee deep in mixing the Live CD as I write this.  It will be out January next year. Stay tuned!



Bad Unkl Sista

I just finished mixing this cool project by Bad Unkl Sista.  We recorded and mixed the music at Hyde Street Studios.  This project had some instrumentation that I don’t come across that often:  Throat singing, Hang, Giant 50″ drum with handmade iron tongue drum sitting on it, bowls, duduk.  The project came out sounding great and they are raising money to promote and take the show on the road. So throw some cash down already!!
